What We’re Building
Honeycomb defined the concept of observability and is raising expectations of what developer tools can do! Honeycomb is the observability platform that enables engineering teams to find and solve problems they couldn't before. It enables engineers to answer novel questions about their ever-evolving cloud applications, so they can deploy confidently, resolve incidents faster and focus on high-value work that drives innovation. We’re working with well known companies like HelloFresh, Slack, LaunchDarkly, and Vanguard and more across a range of industries. This is an exciting time in our trajectory, we’ve closed Series D funding, scaled past the 150-person mark, and were named to Forbes’ America’s Best Startups of 2022!
In this Director of Design role, you’ll be leading a team in evolving a loved product to a broader audience, which means you'll be working across disciplines to understand the market, connect design to the overall needs of the business, and chart a course to maximize the impact of our designers' creativity. You'll be the champion for design thinking and investment at Honeycomb, evangelizing a vision for how world-class design can elevate our brand perception and user experience alike. The contributions of your team will be key in helping us to empower engineers to launch investigations and give them more confidence in how their software behaves in production.
You are a leader that can catalyze positive change. Satya Nadella’s three leadership expectations should resonate strongly: you bring clarity to those you work with, generate energy, not only on your own teams but across the company, and finally, you find a way to deliver success, to make things happen.
Who We Are
We come for the impact, and stay for the culture! We’re a talented, opinionated, passionate, fiercely inclusive, and responsible group of bees. We have conviction and we strive to live our values every day. We want our people to do what they truly love amongst a team of highly talented (but humble) peers.
How We Work
We are a remote-first company, which means we believe it is not where you sit, but how you deliver that matters most. We invest in our people and care about how you orient to our culture and processes. At the same time we imbue a lot of trust, autonomy, and accountability from Day 1. #LI-Remote
We can hire for this role in the United States and Canada.

What You’ll Do In the Role:

  • Reporting to the VP of Product, you’ll lead the product design function at Honeycomb.
  • You’ll contribute to our product strategy and define how user-centered design can amplify the value of Honeycomb’s products.
  • As a hands-on design leader, you’ll immerse yourself in the experience of the engineers who use our product and help your team tell the varied and diverse stories of Honeycomb’s customers, internally and externally.
  • As department leader for Design, you’ll own the tools and practices needed to help your team do their absolute best work, and hold them accountable to those expectations for success.
  • As a member of the R&D leadership team, you’ll build strong working relationships with your peer directors in Product and Engineering and reinforce cross-functional collaboration across Honeycomb.
  • You’ll define and promote a consistent design ethos and experience throughout all of Honeycomb’s external properties and assets.
  • You’ll establish KPIs that can be used to measure the impact of design decisions, and promote a data-informed mindset within the design team to complement our qualitative measurement.
  • You’ll elevate your team’s work by sharing your ideas and insights internally (company all hands meetings, demo days) and externally (blog posts, conferences, with customers)

What You’ll Bring:

  • Several years of people management experience in a design leadership role, and a passion for developing talent.
  • Proven experience crafting and advocating for an ambitious, inspiring, differentiated design vision. We’d love to see examples of your work in this area.
  • Strong connection to business outcomes and a point of view on how the design function can best support the larger mission of Honeycomb.
  • A strong sense of curiosity. You care deeply about users, are naturally curious about what pains them and pleases them, and will be relentless in advocating for their best interests in the product. You feel comfortable proactively reaching out to users, and your engagement will be tuned toward empathy and understanding.
  • Enthusiasm for sharing the vision of design for Honeycomb. You enjoy communicating about design and are able to talk about complex design ideas and processes in a way that’s accessible to diverse audiences.
  • Deep experience in UX workflow process and ideation. You have experience conducting research, discovery, wire-framing, and using prototyping to validate and convey ideas.
  • Exposure and experience with developer ecosystems. You have familiarity with tools across the build/deploy/observe spectrum, starting with the IDE, rolling through CI/CD, all the way through to production debugging.
  • Experience in user research methodologies and a strong empathy for users' needs and pain points, translating insights into actionable design improvements.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to clearly present design decisions and rationale to cross-functional teams and leadership.
  • Proactive, collaborative, and adaptable mindset, with the ability to thrive in a dynamic environment and take
