What We’re Building
Honeycomb defined the concept of observability and is raising expectations of what our developer tools can do! Honeycomb is the observability platform that enables engineering teams to find and solve problems they couldn't before. It enables engineers to answer novel questions about their ever-evolving cloud applications, so they can deploy confidently, resolve incidents faster and focus on high-value work that drives innovation. We’re working with well known companies like HelloFresh, Slack, LaunchDarkly, and Vanguard and more across a range of industries. This is an exciting time in our trajectory, we’ve closed Series D funding, scaled past the 150-person mark, and were named to Forbes’ America’s Best Startups of 2022 and 2023!!
Honeycomb is currently seeking a Senior Technical Writer who will work closely with engineers, product managers, and customer-facing teams to create clear, accurate, and helpful documentation that enables technical customers to become observability champions. You will also contribute to and help execute our vision—documenting a range of new features, tackling architectural changes, and editing to pave our users' way to clarity.
Who We Are
We come for the impact, and stay for the culture! We’re a talented, opinionated, passionate, fiercely inclusive, and responsible group of bees. We have conviction and we strive to live our values every day. We want our people to do what they truly love amongst a team of highly talented (but humble) peers.
How We Work
We are a remote-first company, which means we believe it is not where you sit, but how you deliver that matters most. We invest in our people and care about how you orient to our culture and processes. At the same time we imbue a lot of trust, autonomy, and accountability from Day 1.
We can hire for this role in the United States and Canada.

What You’ll Do:

  • Write stellar, user-centric docs. Mold the contributions of engineers, PMs, and other partners into streamlined, effective docs; Author new content based on your roadmap projects and feedback.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, design, and GTM partners to define outcomes for documentation projects — including new feature launches, troubleshooting, best practices, references, and more. Work with SMEs to plan and publish clear, accurate content.
  • Contribute to the vision of the Docs team by brainstorming ideas, investigating possibilities, and helping refine plans for future organization, content development, and tooling.
  • Use feedback from various sources to iterate on existing docs and documentation practices in ongoing fashion.
  • Create with language; you have an eye for effective content design. You are an important customer-facing voice for Honeycomb. You care deeply about the words used to convey an idea or process. You’re an opinionated but flexible writer and editor.
  • Advocate on behalf of our users. As a technical writer, you’re a champion for users, and you bring a beginner’s mindset to features, product experiences, best practices, and guidance. Use that fresh perspective to provide important feedback to teams and build clear, helpful docs for end users.
  • Champion an experimentation mindset. Build to learn; deliver value fast, and iterate.

About You:

  • You’re a solid writer and editor. You understand the importance of style, tone, and content organization, and you know that all the mechanical prowess in the world means nothing if you aren’t meeting your audience’s needs. You see editing as a means of encouraging growth for all writers both inside and outside of the Docs team. You are familiar with following and contributing to style guides.
  • You’re experienced in technical documentation for a SaaS product. You’ve developed and executed content standards, driven strategic initiatives, and can talk about the business impact of your team’s work.
  • You care deeply about your end users and their needs. You naturally gravitate towards wanting to understand your users, and you’re relentless in advocating for their best interests. Your engagement is tuned towards empathy and understanding. You love to partner with PMs and other stakeholders to deeply understand your users and the challenges they face.
  • You’re an active listener and value clear, open communication. You use active listening to elicit key insights and feedback from subject matter experts and collaborators, and leverage what you’ve learned to build great docs. You can generate buy-in to your initiatives, wrangle opinions, reconcile them with data, clearly communicate how you made decisions, and drive alignment.
  • You’re familiar with a docs-as-code approach to technical documentation. You’re comfortable working with technical contributors on Github PRs, and are adept with static site generators, like Hugo. Nice to have: You’re familiar with OpenAPI documentation and related tooling like Redocly. You’ve been through the process of evaluating tooling to meet the needs of both users and internal stakeholders.
  • You’re data-driven and results-oriented. You have experience using analytics tools to track docs KPIs, or are highly motivated to learn. At Honeycomb, we use both qualitative and quantitative data to make decisions.
  • You’re curious and creative. You’ll be taking directional guidance and using it as the basis for charting your team’s discovery adventures and plans. You find ambiguity inspiring and are driven to navigate your way through it to a place of clarity. You value making space for learning before pushing toward a solution.
  • You know how to think big and build small. You are equally at home setting a vision and identifying small pieces of value that can be delivered iteratively. You enjoy spinning plates and shepherding docs work through its entire lifecycle.
