The Opportunity

We are looking for an Insurance Regulatory and Compliance Paralegal in Columbus. In this role, you will play a critical role in enforcing the fundamental fairness values on which Root was founded. You will assist the Legal and Compliance teams in a variety of duties with the goal of helping Root to think critically about the needs of our customers and our business operations.

You will be responsible for providing compliance and regulatory support on a wide variety of matters that may include Company Licensing, Corporate Transactions, and Insurance Underwriting, Product, and Pricing. Your duties will include creating, updating and/or maintaining countrywide legal authority; monitoring and reporting changes to US laws, regulations, and department bulletins or other communications; drafting of Board resolutions, agendas and minutes; reviewing responses to regulatory inquiries and/or consumer complaints; and assisting with insurance regulatory filings, including affiliated transaction reporting, company licensing, and Uniform Certificate of Authority Applications. You will also interact cross-functionally to manage business processes and timelines to complete various compliance tasks in the government affairs and corporate secretary organizations.

This position is Hybrid and requires the role to be in office part time.

Salary Range: $85,000 to $100,000

How You Will Make an Impact

  • By timely providing multi jurisdictional legal research on a variety of insurance regulatory, corporate governance, compliance, claims, and privacy issues assigned by attorneys and members of the Compliance team.

  • Accurately researching state and federal law on assigned topics to provide clear guidance in a timely manner in both formal and informal, as well as written and verbal, formats.

  • Integrating with the team and participating in a wide variety of projects to provide clear and actionable legal research and work product.

  • Interacting and communicating effectively with the team and our business partners.

What You Will Need to Succeed

  • Paralegal certificate from an accredited paralegal training program.

  • 3+ years of relevant experience either in the role of an insurance paralegal working for a property/casualty insurance company or a firm.

  • Demonstrated legal research ability using WestLaw, Wolters Kluwer, Trade Association resources (APCIA), and other sources.

  • The ability to compile 50 state research projects and matrices on a variety of insurance regulatory issues in a timely manner.

  • Comprehension and experience with privacy laws, state and federal requirements around the use of credit, Compliance projects and automobile multi-state insurance regulatory research preferred, but not required.

  • Experience in government affairs, corporate secretary functions, or compliance is a plus.

  • Comfort with new forms of technology in the workplace and the ability to adapt quickly to new areas of the law.

  • Demonstrated legal writing ability and talent for translating complex legal concepts into clear and concise terms with actionable deliverables.

  • Ability to build collaborative working relationships.

  • Comfort in an environment with ambiguity and ability to adapt when changes occur.

  • Ability to speak and partner effectively in a matrixed environment.

  • Dedicated sense of professionalism and ethical conduct.

  • Great attention to detail.

  • Self-starter mentality and ability to work independently and effectively prioritize work.

  • Ability to approach problems with an open mind.
